Just as the tides wash back and forth along the banks of the Thames, so the hub of London life has shifted, from the Roman sanctuary on Ludgate Hill to the Saxon Palace of Westminster and back. In this walk we go downstream with the river and its freight of history. Much of this history is still written in the streets themselves. Citizens of Londonium, Saxon Lundenwic and medieval London would recognise much of the city's ground plan, and street-names too have echoed down the centuries, shaping the lives of generations of their inhabitants.
