La Vía Francígena fue un importante camino medieval de 2.000 km y ruta de peregrinación a Roma que llevaba de Canterbury (Inglaterra) a la tumba de San Pedro en la Basílica de San Pedro en el Vaticano. Atravesaba Francia (de ahí proviene la denominación francígena o camino de los francos) y Suiza y entraba en Italia, fundamentalmente, por el paso del Gran San Bernardo.
