Si l’on dit que «Les Clermontois se marient sur la rue», c’est que le premier Hôtel de Ville de Clermont et sa salle des mariages enjambaient déjà la rue.
Cette particularité a été maintenue lors de la reconstruction de l’Hôtel de Ville, en 1888.
Il constitue une intégration et une synthèse – certains disent un pastiche – des divers styles de la place du village.
Avec un élément original : la ‘poivrière’, une tourelle qui n’existait pas auparavant.
Dans le passé, l’Hôtel de Ville servait aussi de cour de justice et abritait un cachot.
Chaque semaine, un marché franc (exempt de taxes) se déroulait sur la place, face à l’Hôtel de Ville. Il attirait de nombreux commerçants au village.
