Si trova al centro dell'omonimo golfo che va da capo Milazzo a capo Calavà. È il quinto comune più popoloso della città metropolitana di Messina, dopo il capoluogo e i centri di Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto, Milazzo e Capo d'Orlando. La città, oltre a essere sede storica di numerose istituzioni, uffici amministrativi e servizi d'interesse pubblico, è anche sede di distretto giudiziario e sede vescovile della diocesi di Patti, una delle più antiche di Sicilia, che comprende i 41 comuni dell'area messinese da Oliveri a Tusa. Il comune di Patti fa parte del Consorzio Intercomunale Tindari-Nebrodi.
