I VII Giochi olimpici invernali si sono svolti a Cortina d'Ampezzo dal 26 gennaio al 5 febbraio 1956. Furono la prima manifestazione olimpica tenutasi in una città italiana.
Il conte Alberto Bonacossa con sua moglie Maria, d'accordo con le autorità sportive del tempo, incoraggiò l'Amministrazione comunale di Cortina d'Ampezzo a porre la propria candidatura per i Giochi olimpici invernali del 1944.
Nella trentottesima sessione del CIO del 1939, tenutasi a Londra dal 6 al 9 giugno, Cortina ottenne l'assegnazione battendo le altre candidature di Oslo e Montréal.
Lo scoppio della seconda guerra mondiale stroncò purtroppo l'iniziativa.
