Der Birsig ist ein etwa 20 km langer linker Nebenfluss des Rheins, in den er mitten in der Stadt Basel mündet. Sein Einzugsgebiet ist etwa 82 km² gross. Der Oberlauf des Birsigs fliesst abwechselnd auf französischem und auf schweizerischem Gebiet. Sein Tal heißt zunächst Leimental. Birsigtal wird es erst im Unterlauf genannt. Es gehört grossteils zum Sundgauischen Hügelland.
Die Bezeichnung Birsig ist vordeutsch; man geht aus von einem keltischen Bersikos. Der Flussname Birsig steht in Zusammenhang mit dem Namen der nahen Birs. Dieser gilt als alteuropäisch mit der Bedeutung die Schnelle. Birsig kann man verstehen als Nebenfluss der Birs oder kleine Birs.
