Il castello fu menzionato per la prima volta in un documento nel 1241 in relazione al suo proprietario dell'epoca, il vassallo di Kyburg Burchardus de Kevincon. Il castello, con la sua storia movimentata, perse il suo significato feudale con l'abolizione della regola di corte dopo il 1798 e divenne una residenza di campagna dell'alta borghesia, tra gli altri per Hans Conrad Escher von der Linth, noto per la costruzione del canale di Linth. Il castello si trova vicino a Frauenfeld, proprio accanto a Islikon.
Al giorno d'oggi, il castello è anche noto per la scuola privata Schloss Kefikon, che ha celebrato il suo 100 ° anniversario nel 2006. Il terreno del collegio comprende anche il più grande stagno naturale della Svizzera, che è lungo 100 metri e largo 30 metri.
