Gran Canaria è una delle Isole Canarie, di origine vulcanica, terza isola per dimensione nella Macaronesia e seconda isola più popolata dell'arcipelago . Politicamente condivide lo status di Capoluogo delle Isole Canarie con Santa Cruz de Tenerife in cui ha sede il parlamento, mentre a Las Palmas de Gran Canaria si trova la sede del Governo delle Canarie . Gran Canaria con una superficie di 1.560,1 km quadrati e un'altezza massima di 1956 metri con il Pico de las Nieves, è la terza isola più grande dell'arcipelago per estensione e altitudine.
L'isola fu popolata fin dal 3000 a.C. dai Guanci, che erano indigeni aborigeni e la chiamavano Tamarán, ma fu rivendicata dalla Spagna nel XV secolo.
