Aan het einde van de 18de eeuw annexeert Frankrijk onze gewesten. Napoleon vreest een aanval vanuit Engeland op de haven van Oostende en laat daarom in 1811 een imposant fort optrekken in de duinen. In de beide wereldoorlogen krijgt het fort opnieuw een bestemming als artilleriekwartier van het Duitse leger. Sinds 1995 beheert Erfgoed Vlaanderen het Fort Napoleon. Erfgoed Vlaanderen zorgde voor de restauratie en maakte er een open monument van. Vandaag is er een museum, bistro en restaurant in onder gebracht.
