In een broekbos staan de bomen hoofdzakelijk met hun wortels in het water. Niet veel bomen vinden het fijn in zo'n vochtig bos, de els is daar een uitzondering op. Vroeger groeiden ze massaal in de moerassen van het Stropersbos. Dwaallichtjes zijn 'kleine spookjes' die verdwaalde reizigers nog verder het bos in lokten. Vroeger geloofden de mensen dat deze dwaallichtjes overdag in elzen wonen. Vandaar dat elzen ook wel spookbomen genoemd worden. In de moerassen waar elzen groeien zijn 's nachts soms echt lichtjes te zien. Nu weten we dat dit gas is van rottend hout, het hout ligt onder water en het gas komt in een belletje naar de oppervlakte. Dat geeft soms een klein vonkje dat lijkt op een lichtje.
