De schilder Jan Van Eyck kwam naar Santiago de Compostella tijdens zijn reis naar Portugal in 1429. Hij was lid van een Bourgondische delegatie. Officieel kwam hij naar Portugal om een portret te schilderen van prinses Isabella van Portugal. De uiteindelijke bedoeling was dat er een alliantie zou komen tussen Bourgondië en Portugal via een huwelijk tussen Filips de Goede en Isabella. Jan Van Eyck nam deel aan de onderhandelingen voor het huwelijkscontract.
