Don Benito is een kleine maar levendige stad in Extremadura.
De stad bestond al in de tijden van de Romeinen, de Visigothen en de Arabieren, maar de eerste vermelding van Don Benito dateert van het einde van de 15de eeuw. Het stadje groeit meteen explosief. In die tijd moet men het vooral hebben van de landbouw en de veeteelt vlak bij de rivier Guadarrama.
In de 20ste eeuw heeft het stadje veel te lijden onder de Burgeroorlog. De Sierra de Ortiga was één van de steunpunten van het Republikeinse leger aan het front in Extremedura. Er was een heel netwerk van loopgraven en bunkers uitgewerkt.
