Het officiële debuut van Renault in de Formule 1 vond plaats in 1977. Tijdens de Britse Grand Prix op 16 juli 1977 kwam de RS01 voor het eerst in actie. Al na zestien ronden moest de Franse coureur Jean Pierre Jabouille de wedstrijd staken. Ondanks deze matige start zou dit leerjaar Renault later tot grote hoogten brengen. De RS01 was overigens de eerste Formule 1-auto met een turbo.
In 1979 wist Renault haar eerste overwinning binnen te halen. In de Franse Grand Prix op Dijon-Prenois behaalde Jabouille de eerste plaats, en liet zo Gilles Villeneuve en René Arnoux achter zich, die beiden een heroïsch gevecht om de tweede plaats hadden uitgevochten.
