Die École polytechnique zählt zu den angesehensten und selektivsten zwei der für Frankreich typischen als grandes écoles bezeichneten Elitehochschulen. Die École polytechnique ist besonders für ihr Ingenieurstudium polytechnicien berühmt, aber bietet auch zweijährige Masterstudien sowie Promotionsstudien. Sie ist Gründungsmitglied der Universität Paris-Saclay.
Die Hochschule wurde im Jahr 1794 während der französischen Revolution von Gaspard Monge gegründet und wurde 1804 von Napoleon I zu einer Militärakademie erklärt. Auch heute noch ist sie dem Verteidigungsministerium unterstellt. Die Studiendauer für den Polytechnicien beträgt heute vier Jahre , wobei das letzte Jahr als Anwendungsstudium in einer anderen Universität verbracht wird. Der Abschluss heißt Ingénieur de l’École polytechnique. Unter den Absolventen befinden sich viele Persönlichkeiten aus Wirtschaft, Politik und Wissenschaft, beispielsweise drei Nobelpreisträger, ein Fields-Medaillen-Gewinner, sowie drei französische Präsidenten und vier Marschälle von Frankreich.
