El Cementiri municipal al pla de Sant Nicolau es va inaugurar el 1864 i des d'aleshores s'hi han fet diverses ampliacions. La ubicació a l'altra banda del riu obeïa a motius higiènics i d'espai. L'església, situada al centre del recinte, és obra de l'arquitecte Miquel Pascual i Tintorer i es va acabar de construir el 1891. El cementiri conté nombroses tombes i mausoleus de tots els estils artístics, alguns amb obres d'autors reconeguts, amb una simbologia molt rica i variada.
