Das Lager von Rivesaltes wurde 1939 als Militärlager Camp Maréchal Joffre errichtet und diente ab 1941 der Internierung verschiedener Bevölkerungsgruppen. Es befindet sich ca. 45 Kilometer nördlich der spanischen Grenze nahe der Stadt Perpignan im französischen Département Pyrénées-Orientales. Das 612 Hektar große Lagergelände erstreckt sich zu vier Fünfteln auf dem Kommunalgebiet von Rivesaltes und zu einem Fünftel auf dem von Salses-le-Château. Es wird in seiner Mitte von der Departementstraße Rivesaltes-Opoul durchquert und ist an das Schienennetz Narbonne-Perpignan angeschlossen.
