Die Charter Oak war eine stattliche alte Eiche in der Stadt Hartford, die eine besondere Rolle in der Folklore des amerikanischen Bundesstaats Connecticut spielt. Sie war lange eines der Wahrzeichen Hartfords, bis sie in der Nacht vom 20. auf den 21. August 1855 in einem Sturm fiel.
Der Legende nach versteckten im Jahr 1687 die Siedler Connecticuts im hohlen Stamm dieses Baumes die charter ihrer Kolonie, als der neue königliche Gouverneur Edmund Andros versuchte, sie zu beschlagnahmen. Die Charter garantierte als eine Art Verfassung die weitreichende Selbstverwaltung der Colony of Connecticut, und so ist die Charter Oak als „Behüterin der Verfassung“ und Symbol des Freiheitswillens heute eines der offiziellen Embleme des Staates Connecticut; 1947 wurde die Amerikanische Weiß-Eiche per Gesetz zum „Staatsbaum“ Connecticuts erklärt.
