Il Jet Propulsion Laboratory del California Institute of Technology è un laboratorio statunitense, nei pressi di Pasadena, in California, attualmente dedicato alla progettazione, allo sviluppo e alla costruzione delle sonde spaziali senza equipaggio della NASA.
Il JPL fu fondato il 31 ottobre 1936, quando il professor Theodore von Kármán , iniziò i suoi esperimenti sulla propulsione a razzo. Durante la seconda guerra mondiale, l'Army Air Corps degli Stati Uniti chiese al JPL di analizzare i razzi V2 sviluppati dalla Germania nazista, e di occuparsi di altri progetti con scopi bellici. Da questi studi il JPL sviluppò il razzo Corporal che fu utilizzato nella Guerra di Corea. Da questo progetto, più tardi, fu sviluppato il razzo Sergeant fino alla sua interruzione avvenuta nel 1958.
