In de nacht van 11 op 12 mei 2008 werd de als monument geklasseerde classicistische Sint-Pieterskerk bijna volledig door brand vernield. Slechts enkele muren en de sacristie staan nog overeind. De inboedel is eveneens door de brand verloren gegaan. Van de oorspronkelijke kerk was nog enkel de torenkern uit de 13e eeuw bewaard en deze is nu ook volledig vernield. De oorzaak was vermoedelijk een afgeschoten vuurpijl. In Galmaarden vond op dat moment naar aanleiding van Pinksteren een kermis plaats.
