Op 9 juni 1953 brandde de kerk af als gevolg van een kortsluiting. De kerk werd in 1956 heropgebouwd en ingewijd op 20 juni 1959. De kerk is een modern bouwwerk en bezit geen pilaren. De kruisweg is een werk van Marcel Notebaert (1924-1986), een befaamd kunstschilder en laureaat van verschillende binnen- en buitenlandse prijzen. Er was vanwege de bevolking aanvankelijk nogal wat kritiek over de moderne stijl van deze kruisweg.
