Als je in deze Grand Canyon kijkt, kijk je letterlijk diep inde tijd terug. Je ziet hier een afbeelding van de geologische doorsnede van de Grand Canyon. De oudste gesteeten vind je onderaan en komen uit de Unkar Group. Die dateren van 1250 & 1104 Ma (1,104 miljoen jaar gelden, of 1,1 miljard jaar gelden). Dus ze behoren tot het Precambrium. Het Precambrium bevat alle tijd tussen het ontstaan van de Aarde (4560 miljoen jaar (of 4,56 Ga) geleden) en 542 Ma. Het Precambrium omvat twee eonen:

  •   Proterozoïcum (2500 - 542 Ma)
  •   Archeïcum (4560 - 2500 Ma)

Wat je hier aantreft is dus deel van het Proterozoïcum.
