Het Monterey Jazz Festival vindt jaarlijks plaats op het derde september-weekend in Monterey . In 1958 door James L. Lyons en de jazzcriticus Ralph J. Gleason opgericht, traden in hetzelfde jaar bekende jazzgrootheden op, waaronder Dizzy Gillespie, Louis Armstrong, Charles Mingus en Billie Holiday. Tegenwoordig is het een van de oudste jazzfestivals. Het centrale concertprogramma wordt omlijst door workshops, tentoonstellingen en podiumdiscussies.
Een belangrijke drijfveer van het festival is de financiëring van Amerikaanse bevorderingsprogramma's voor jazz. Ieder jaar slaagt het festival met zijn kaderprogramma erin om opbrengsten met zescijferige getallen te werven. De jarenlange fotograaf van het festival was sinds de jaren 70 Ron Hudson , die door zijn portretten grote populariteit genoot.
Volgens persberichten heeft het festival voor 2015 in totaal 116.500 dollar subsidiegelden geworven.
