Dresden té una llarga història com a capital i com a residència reial dels governants de Saxònia, amb segles d'esplendor cultural i artístic. El bombardeig de Dresden a la II Guerra Mundial i els quaranta anys que ha format part de la República Democràtica Alemanya han alterat considerablement l'aspecte de la ciutat.
