Maó és un municipi i la capital de l'illa de Menorca, situat a l'est de l'illa; i és la seu actual del Consell Insular de Menorca. Té 28.592 habitants , la qual cosa fa que Maó sigui la segona ciutat més poblada de Menorca.
La ciutat de Maó es troba a l'est de l'illa de Menorca, i al final del port de Maó. Les seves coordenades són: 39° 53′ 21″ N i 4° 15′ 49″ E. Es troba a uns 72 metres d'alçada, però —atès que la ciutat arriba fins al port— té importants desnivells. El terme municipal de Maó limita amb els d'Es Castell, Sant Lluís, Alaior i Es Mercadal.
