Ja és documentat l'any 1017 amb el nom de Serra. Les cases estan distribuïdes entorn de l'església parroquial sense una disposició urbanística clara. Està emplaçat a tocar una cruïlla de carreteres direcció Parlavà, Torroella i la Bisbal.
Els límits del terme municipal són al nord amb Verges i la Tallada d'Empordà, a l'est amb Fontanilles i Ullastret, al sud amb Ullastret i a l'oest amb Parlavà, Ultramort i Ullastret. Té agregat el nucli de Sant Iscle d'Empordà,
