Està situada just al sud de la meitat nord de la comarca, o bé al nord de la zona central, a prop i al nord de Sort. La vila és a la dreta de la Noguera Pallaresa, mentre que el terme comprèn la major part de la vall.
El 1969 fou unit al terme antic de Rialb el de Surp, per tal de formar el municipi actual, molt més extens que el primigeni.
