El palau dels Papes d'Avinyó és la més gran de les construccions gòtiques de l'edat mitjana. Sent a la vegada fortalesa i palau, la residència papal durant el segle xiv fou la seu de la cristiandat occidental. Sis conclaves es van celebrar al palau d'Avinyó, que van culminar en l'elecció de Benet XII el 1335; Climent VI el 1342; Innocenci VI el 1352; Urbà V el 1362, Gregori XI el 1370, i Benet XIII el 1394.
