El ducat de Lorena fou un estat independent durant la majoria del període entre l'any 843 i 1739. La seva capital se situava a Nancy. El ducat, així com la regió moderna de Lorena, fou objecte de disputa entre França i Alemanya durant segles.
De 1634 à 1697, el rei de França intervé obertament dins el ducat de la Lorena, imposant per la força els ducs, i ocupant directament el ducat.
