La font va ser inaugurada el 17 d'octubre del 1899 a la plaça Ducal com a homenatge al fundador de la ciutat. El març de 1999, cent anys després, va ser traslladada al carrer Pierre-Bérégovoy per fer obres, cosa que va provocar l'enuig dels descendents dels inversors originals de l'estàtua.
Els estanys i el pedestal de 6,20 metres són de granit dels Vosges, obra de l'escultor de marbre Pelletier Dapremont. El pilar està coronat per una estàtua de bronze de 3,5 metres d'alçada de Charles de Gonzague . Les altres figures, nens muntats en tritons i caps de lleó en ferro colat, van ser foses a la Vall d'Osne per Gaudiot L.
En 1606, Charles de Gonzague va decidir convertir Charleville en la capital del seu nou principat d'Arche . Va triar una ubicació a 45 km de Rehtel, la capital del seu ducat. Aquesta ciutat monàstica permetria estendre la seva influència sobre el nord d'Europa.
