La fontana fu inaugurata il 17 ottobre 1899 in Place Ducale come omaggio al fondatore della città. Nel marzo 1999, cento anni dopo, fu spostata in rue Pierre-Bérégovoy per lavori, con grande rabbia dei discendenti degli investitori originali della statua.
Le vasche e il piedistallo alto 6,20 metri sono realizzati in granito dei Vosgi, opera dello scultore del marmo Pelletier Dapremont. Il molo è sormontato da una statua in bronzo alta 3,5 metri raffigurante Carlo Gonzaga . Le altre figure, bambini che cavalcano tritoni e teste di leone in ghisa, sono state fuse a Val d'Osne da Gaudinot L.
Nel 1606, Charles de Gonzague decise di fare di Charleville la capitale del suo nuovo principato di Arche . Scelse una località a 45 km da Rehtel, la capitale del suo ducato. Questa città monastica gli avrebbe permesso di estendere la sua influenza sull'Europa settentrionale.
