L'HMS Royal Oak va ser un cuirassat classe Revenge de la Royal Navy britànica. Botat el 1914 i completat el 1916, entrà en acció per primera vegada a la batalla de Jutlàndia. En temps de pau serví a l'Atlàntic i a les flotes de la Mediterrània i de les aigües territorials britàniques, essent objecte d'atacs accidentals en més d'una ocasió. El vaixell va atraure l'atenció del món el 1928 quan els seus oficials d'alt rang van ser sotmesos a una cort marcial en un procés molt controvertit. Els intents per modernitzar el Royal Oak durant els seus 25 anys de carrera no van poder solucionar la seva manca de velocitat, i a l'inici de la Segona Guerra Mundial ja no estava destinat a la primera línia de combat.
