El HMS Royal Oak fue un acorazado clase Revenge de la Marina Real británica. Botado en 1914 y completado en 1916, entró en acción por primera vez en la Batalla de Jutlandia. En tiempo de paz sirvió en el Atlántico y en las flotas del Mediterráneo y de las aguas territoriales británicas, siendo objeto de ataques accidentales en más de una ocasión. El barco atrajo la atención mundial cuando en 1928 sus oficiales de alto rango fueron sometidos a una corte marcial en un proceso muy controvertido. Los intentos de modernizar el Royal Oak a lo largo de sus veinticinco años de carrera no pudieron solucionar su falta de velocidad, y al inicio de la Segunda Guerra Mundial ya no estaba destinado en la primera línea de combate.
