El Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory és una institució d'investigació de l'Institut Smithsonian que té la seva seu en Cambridge, Massachusetts. Treballa al costat del Harvard College Observatory , formant el Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics .
El Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory es va fundar en 1890 per Samuel Pierpont Langley, un alt càrrec de l'Institut Smithsonian, per estudiar la naturalesa solar. Encara que Langley es recorda com un pioner en el camp de l'aeronàutica, va estudiar astronomia i va ser el primer nord-americà a comprendre l'astrofísica com un camp a part.
