Després que la caravana presidencial hagué travessat a baixa velocitat el centre de la ciutat i quan la limusina presidencial descapotada passava per Dealey Plaza, John F. Kennedy fou mortalment ferit per trets d'arma de foc. Fou el quart president dels Estats Units a ser víctima d'un assassinat i el vuitè a morir en l'exercici del seu càrrec.
