Stams ligger i Oberinntal mellem Telfs og Imst. Kommunen består af landsbydelene Thannrain, Windfang, Haslach, Mähmoos og Staudach Hauland. Ved grundlæggelsen af cistercienserklosteret i 1273 af grev Meinhard II af Tirol blev Stams det åndelige centrum for regionen.
I dag har Stams især en central funktion inden for undervisning. I kommunen ligger den pædagogiske akademi, studiecentret for bispesædet Innsbruck, gymnasiet Meinhardinum og skigymnasiet samt erhvervsskolen, hvor mange kendte østerriske skihoppspringere har fået deres uddannelse. Der er også en campingplads i Stams. Stamser Straße forbinder landsbyen med Tiroler Straße.
