For omkring 700 år siden ankom augustinerne til Gent. De besluttede at bygge et kloster på et stykke jord, der ikke var alt for dyrt at købe. Så blev det til sumpejord. Da det ikke ligefrem er nemt at plante en solid konstruktion på svampet jord, byggede fædrene deres kloster på træpæle, som de først havde smurt ind i tjære og derefter beklædt med dyreskinder. I løbet af årene er disse pæle blevet forstenet af trykket. Hvor der tidligere var stueetage, er der nu kælder. Gennem århundrederne er byens niveau jævnt steget. Dette skyldes på den ene side mangel på affaldsindsamling og på den anden side udfyldning af sumpen.
