Vor etwa 700 Jahren kamen die Augustiner-Mönche nach Gent. Sie entschieden sich, ein Kloster auf einem Stück Moorland zu bauen, das nicht zu teuer zu erwerben war. Sie errichteten das Kloster auf Holzpfählen, eine Technik, die auch in Amsterdam verwendet wurde. Zuerst rieben sie die Pfähle mit Öl ein und danach bedeckten sie sie mit Tierhaut. Im Laufe der Jahre sind diese Pfähle aufgrund des Drucks versteinert.
Was früher das Erdgeschoss war, sind jetzt die Keller, wegen der Anhebung des Straßenniveaus.
