Kernen af Machelen-aan-Leie opstod på en hævning ved den højre ydre bøjning af Leie, kaldet 'Machelen-put'. Den typiske trekantede form af landsbyens forplads kan tyde på en frankisk bosættelse. De saliske franskmænd krydsede ved slutningen af antikken Rhinen og bosatte sig i disse områder (Chlodovech-Chlodwig-Clovis blev døbt i 504 i Reims). Første omtaler af landsbyen i 697, 820 og 830 i annalerne fra St. Peters kloster i Gent som 'Machlinio, Machlinum, eller Mageleno, ifølge professor Gysseling sandsynligvis afledt af det oldgermanske 'magalium', som betyder mægtig, stærk.
