El núcleo del pueblo de Machelen-aan-Leie se desarrolló en una elevación en la curva exterior derecha del Leie, conocida como 'Machelen-put'. La típica forma triangular de la plaza del pueblo podría indicar un asentamiento francón. Los francos salios cruzaron el Rin a finales de la antigüedad y se establecieron en estas áreas (Clodoveo-Clodwig-Clovis fue bautizado en 504 en Reims). Primeras menciones del pueblo en 697, 820 y 830 en los anales de la abadía de San Pedro de Gante como 'Machlinio, Machlinum, o Mageleno', según el profesor Gysseling probablemente derivado del antiguo germánico 'magalium', que significa poderoso, fuerte.
