Siden midten af det 13. århundrede er der blevet æret en romansk Maria-figur i Alsemberg, som angiveligt blev givet til menigheden af Sofia, hustru til hertug Henrik II af Brabant. Legenden fortæller, at den hellige jomfru fra dronningen af Ungarn, Elisabeth af Thüringen, ønskede, at der skulle bygges en kirke i Brabant, på bjerget, hvor alsem blomstrede. Den romansk-byzantinske mirakuløse figur af Moder Jomfru, kaldet "Stjernen til Havet", stammer fra omkring 1200 og er udskåret af ungarsk hæg. Prinsesse Sofia, datter af den i 1231 afdøde hellige Elisabeth af Ungarn, bragte den til Alsemberg, da hun blev gift med hertug Henrik i 1242.
