Depuis le milieu du 13ème siècle, une statue romane de Marie a été vénérée à Alsemberg, qui aurait été donnée à la paroisse par Sofia, épouse du duc Henri II de Brabant. La légende raconte que la Vierge de la reine de Hongrie, Elisabeth de Thuringe, voulait qu’elle construise une église dans le Brabant, sur la montagne où l’absinthe prospérait. La statue miraculeuse romano-byzantine de la Mère Vierge, invoquée comme « l’étoile de la mer », date d’environ 1200 et est sculptée dans le charme hongrois. La princesse Sofia, fille de sainte Elisabeth de Hongrie, morte en 1231, l’apporta à Alsemberg lorsqu’elle épousa le duc Henri en 1242.
