Selvom Aywaille ikke er stor, bor der over otte tusinde mennesker, og derfor har den en central rolle for området. Det er også et vigtigt vejknudepunkt: Aywaille kaldes nogle gange porten til de Liège-ardener. Tæt på kæmpede østrigere og franskmænd i 1794 en af deres slag på højden Sur La Reid eller Heid des Gattes, som nu er et naturreservat.
