Anche se Aywaille non è grande, ci vivono più di ottomila persone, e per questo svolge una funzione centrale per la regione. È anche un importante nodo stradale: Aywaille è talvolta chiamata la porta delle Ardenne di Liegi. Vicino a lì, a livello del plateau di Sur La Reid o Heid des Gattes, nel 1794 si svolse una delle loro battaglie tra austriaci e francesi, che ora è una riserva naturale.
