I 1889 blev Blankenberge fødested for Frans Masereel, senere tegner og grafiker. Masereel skulle illustrere bøger af Tolstoj, Hemingway, Zola, Vermeylen, Teirlinck, Guy de Maupassant og mange andre.
Han døde i Avignon og ligger begravet i Campo Santo i Sint-Amandsberg nær Gent.
