1889 wurde Blankenberge zur Geburtsstadt von Frans Masereel, später Zeichner und Grafiker. Masereel würde Bücher von Tolstoi, Hemingway, Zola, Vermeylen, Teirlinck, Guy de Maupassant und vielen anderen illustrieren.
Er starb in Avignon und liegt auf dem Campo Santo in Sint-Amandsberg bei Gent begraben.
