Arealet Turnhout er et af de tre arealer i provinsen Antwerpen. Arealet har et areal på 1.356,86 km² og havde 461.867 indbyggere den 1. januar 2019. Arealet er opkaldt efter sin vigtigste by. Toponymet Turnhout består af to orddele, nemlig Turn- og hout. Turn- kunne muligvis være afledt fra det germanske ord durnum, som betyder torn. Suffixet -hout kommer fra det germanske ord hulta og betyder skov. Toponymet kan derfor også forklares som tornskov.
