Couvin ligger i den kendte kalkzone af devoon-kalksten. Kalkzonen er et smalt bånd syd for Fagne-Famenne og består næsten udelukkende af kalksten fra Øvre-Devoon. Det er næsten et trappetrin til Ardennerne. Den ligger en del højere end Fagne-Famenne-depressionen. Floderne fra Ardennerne, som passerer gennem denne region, giver anledning til spektakulære opløsningsfænomener. I geologien kalder man disse opløsningsfænomener for karst.
