Den økonomisk elendige tilstand i Gent i det 16. og 17. århundrede ændrede sig i det 18. århundrede på grund af en kriminel handling af Lieven Bauwens. Han smuglede den britiske spinderi ind under den Napoleoniske blokade. Således var han indirekte ansvarlig for megen velstand blandt industrien, men for meget fattigdom blandt arbejderne. I sin tid var han så upopulær i Gent, at han tilbragte meget af sin tid i Frankrig. Nu har han dog en statue.
