Byen ligger ved Maas, cirka 30 km opstrøms fra Maastricht.
Halvvejs gennem det 20. århundrede var Liège centrum for minedrift og stålindustri, der bragte Wallonien velstand. De økonomiske problemer, som senere i århundredet var konsekvensen af nedgangen i minedrift og stålindustri, har ikke undgået at påvirke omgivelserne i Liège.
