La ciudad está situada a orillas del Mosa, aproximadamente 30 km río arriba de Maastricht.
A mediados del siglo XX, Lieja era el centro de la minería y la industria del acero, que trajeron prosperidad a Valonia. Los problemas económicos que más tarde en el siglo fueron el resultado de la disminución de la importancia de la minería y la industria del acero, no pasaron desapercibidos en el entorno de Lieja.
